South boys enjoy a Roll
The Aliso Niguel senior leads the way with 18 points.

COSTA MESA – The game was a lot looser than the practices.

"Those practices were pretty intense," Michael Roll said. "There was a little fighting going on."

The disagreements led to an agreeable outcome for the South, which routed the North, 94-74, Saturday in the Orange County Boys Basketball All-Star Game at Orange Coast College.

Roll, from Aliso Niguel, scored 18 points in the game for high school seniors and was named the South's most valuable player. The Orange County player of the year for the 2004-05 season, Roll scored eight in the first quarter as the South jumped to a 29-17 lead.

"It was a lot of fun playing with guys I've played against and played with since childhood," said Roll, who is going to UCLA.

Four other South players scored in double figures. Blaine Templeton of Dana Hills scored 13, Dan Selway of Northwood scored 12, Brett Sherry of Tesoro had 11 and Darryl Best of El Toro added 10.

Matt Goodloe of Western led the North with 14 points. Garden Grove's David Richmond, who was named the North's most valuable player, scored 12 and was the game's only player to make more than one three-pointer (he made two).

The South took its 29-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed it to 20 by scoring 27 points in the second quarter.

The second half was more competitive, with both teams scoring 38 points over the final two quarters.

"We did what we wanted to do," said South coach Keith Barnett of Aliso Niguel. "We got a lot of points in transition and wore (the North) out."

A highlight was a matchup between two of the county's top point guards, Mater Dei's Mike Gerrity and El Toro's Kelvin Kim. They did not always guard each other, but when they did it was a battle of quickness and ball-handling.

Kim finished with four points, Gerrity with three. South: Roll 18, Kim 3, Perkowski 4, Best 10, Templeton 13, Pinto 9, Selway 12, Young 6, Sherry 11, Engle 3, Johnson 2, Zierer 2
